ORIX Foundation Supports Girls Embracing Mothers at the Texas Legends Basketball Game

By Brittany Byrd, Associate General Council at ORIX

It’s been a great year volunteering with the ORIX Foundation, and I appreciate my colleagues who have joined me in supporting my charity – Girls Embracing Mothers (GEM). After experiencing the incarceration of my mother, I formed the organization to help others.

In February, we were able to bring GEM and ORIX Foundation together to enjoy a Texas Legends basketball game. The Legends pick a charity to recognize at each home game, and on February 5 it was GEM. ORIX Foundation contributed a $2,500 donation.

“We had a blast celebrating with the GEM families at this event,” said Josh Mayfield, president and director of ORIX Foundation. “It’s so important for the kids to get this special time with their mothers to continue building strong relationships and a promising future. We are proud to support the organization.”

At GEM, our primary focus is working with girls in the Dallas area with mothers in prison to break the cycle of incarceration and lead successful lives with vision and purpose. The generous support from the ORIX Foundation helps bring visibility to this underserved population, and more importantly, provides critical programming that will empower girls with mothers in prison to fulfill the meaning of their own creation by using their stumbling blocks as stepping stones for a brighter tomorrow.

In addition to the monetary support, Legends players wore the GEM logo on their jerseys and shooting jackets. The money raised at the Legends game will go directly toward funding the parole program, which allows the girls to visit their mothers at least once a month in an effort to keep a strong relationship building while the mother is in prison.
